Frequently asked questions

Do I need travel insurance?

Things might not go to plan while you’re travelling, unforeseen expenses can quickly add up while you’re overseas, and nothing will dampen a holiday faster than out-of-pocket bills.
One of the most important benefits of comprehensive travel insurance is that it can help protect your financial future against unexpected expenses that arise. Remember the Australian Government will not assist in paying for your medical bills overseas. If you don’t have travel insurance, you and your family may have to carry the cost.
When you purchase a policy with Over Fifty Insurance, you have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team in case something goes wrong on your holiday.
We can also help safeguard you against a range of problems including lost or stolen luggage, travel delays, trip cancellation and more so you can focus on travelling more and worry less.

Can I adjust my travel insurance to suit my trip?

Absolutely! We know each traveller and each trip is different, so we offer several additional options for you to upgrade your cover. Our optional covers include Cruise cover, trip cancellation cover, increased luggage item limits, snow sports cover, motorcycle/moped riding cover and adventure activities cover with our Cover-More travel insurance policy. Also, you can add cover for existing medical conditions.

Can I travel with an existing medical condition?

A recent study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed 47 per cent of Australians have one or more chronic conditions so, before travelling, you should consider speaking to your GP to discuss with whether or not travelling with an existing medical condition is the right thing for you.
Having travel insurance cover for pre-existing medical conditions is also very important to consider when travelling.

Why is it important to disclose pre-existing health conditions?

If you don’t declare your pre-existing medical conditions to your travel insurance provider, you risk being left out-of-pocket should the unexpected occur.
At Over Fifty Insurance, claims which in any way relate to, or are exacerbated by, an existing medical condition or related new infections are specifically excluded from our travel insurance policies unless your EMC is approved by us prior to travel and where required, any additional premium is paid.
If you choose to declare some conditions and not others, or choose not to declare any conditions, you run the risk of a claim being denied by us. This means if you need to cancel your trip there would not be any cover for any prepaid travel costs that you can’t get a refund on, or you would have to pay the cost of your medical treatment and/or other associated costs if illness or a mishap occurred while travelling.

Which existing medical conditions does Over Fifty Insurance need to assess?

Please tell us about all your existing medical conditions. Once we know what your pre-existing medical conditions are, we may be able to cover them for an extra premium. You can then choose whether to pay the required extra premium and add the cover to your policy – or you can choose not to get cover for your existing medical conditions, but keep in mind, if you choose not to add the cover, there will be no cover available for any potential claim related to your existing medical conditions under your policy.

How do I fill out the online health assessment?

You can complete our medical assessment by generating a quote online.
Please read and answer each question.
When adding each existing medical condition, you will need to provide complete and accurate information so we can correctly assess the risk. If you don’t include information about all your EMCs, it may jeopardise the outcome of your claim if you need to make one.
If we can approve your health assessment, we will show you any additional premium required to add cover to your policy for the EMCs. If a premium is applicable to your condition(s) you must pay the quoted extra premium to add cover for your EMCs. An approval number for this cover will then be listed on your Certificate of Insurance as proof of cover.
If you have any difficulties with the process or want a quote for cover, please contact our friendly Customer Care team for assistance on 1300 130 896.

Can I still buy a policy if my existing medical condition is denied?

Finding travel insurance with medical conditions cover can be tough – but we aim to make it as easy as possible.
If your existing medical condition doesn’t meet our criteria and is not covered, it is possible to still get an Over Fifty travel insurance policy for your trip.
However, this would mean that cover for claims which in any way relate to, or are exacerbated by, any existing medical conditions you may have or related new infections are specifically excluded.
Our other benefits, such as protection against lost or delayed luggage, rental vehicle insurance excess, personal liability, and more can still be covered.
Please refer to the PDS for further information on what we can and can’t cover before deciding if our Cover-More travel insurance is right for you.

Does your travel insurance include cruise cover?

Yes, Over Fifty Insurance offers cruise cover as an optional extra on our International Travel Insurance plans. If you are taking a domestic cruise on the sea or ocean, this can be covered as an optional extra under our International Travel Insurance plans – simply select “Domestic cruising” as your travel area.
Cruise Cover benefits can provide cover for medical costs on board, help you if you need to be medically evacuated off the ship, and provide reimbursement for lost luggage and non-refundable expenses (up to the cancellation amount you have added to your policy). Cruise cover may also cover you if you have to cancel the cruise before you depart (exclusions and limits may apply).

Will Medicare cover me for a cruise in Australia?

No. Cruise ships are not obligated to have doctors registered to practice in Australia on board. This means if you visit a doctor on board, it may not be covered by Medicare and you may end up with out-of-pocket expenses.
This is why you should consider travel insurance for any cruises you take in Australia.
At Over Fifty Insurance, our International plans include overseas medical expenses cover when you enter/select “Domestic Cruising” as your travel area and when you tell us about your cruise when you purchase travel insurance.
Our cruise insurance international plans can include cruise cover when you tell us you are travelling on a sea or ocean cruise for two or more nights.

Should I buy a comprehensive Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy?

Yes, our Over Fifty Insurance International Comprehensive, International Basic and Domestic Comprehensive travel insurance plans are available to buy as either Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policies. This means we can provide quality cover for a one-off trip, or multiple trips (up to the maximum trip duration selected) during a 12-month period.
If you’re a frequent traveller, consider our AMT policy option as, it could save you time and money.

What should I know before buying travel insurance?

Before you compare plans and get a quote, we recommend you:

  • Finalise your travel dates and destinations.
    You’ll need to know your trip details, such as where you’re going and how long you’ll be away for, so you can arrange a travel insurance policy that protects your whole trip.
  • Read the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
    Get to know the travel insurance plan you’re considering buying so you can make an informed decision. Familiarise yourself with any terms, conditions and exclusions that are listed in the PDS to avoid disappointment.
  • Know your health and ability to travel
    To get cover for your pre-existing medical conditions, read the PDS carefully and know what conditions you have. Disclose them accurately and honestly to us to see if we can cover them (If you it could negatively affect your policy or claim). An additional premium may apply for cover.
  • Ask questions.
    Chat to our friendly customer service team if you have any questions about what our policy does – and does not – cover on 1300 130 896.
  • Get a quote for travel insurance and compare plans.
    Generate a travel insurance quote online and see what options are available to you based on your travel plans.

Once you’ve arranged travel insurance to protect your trip, you can start counting down the days until your departure!

What is an existing medical condition?

When we refer to the term “existing medical condition” at Cover-More, we mean a disease, illness, medical or dental condition or physical defect that, at the relevant time*, meets any of the following criteria:

  • It has required an emergency department visit, hospitalisation or day surgery procedure within the last 12 months.
  • It requires prescription medication from a qualified medical practitioner; regular review or check-ups; ongoing medication for treatment or risk factor control; or consultation with a specialist.
  • It has been medically documented involving the brain, circulatory system, heart, kidneys, liver, respiratory system, or cancer; or required surgery involving the abdomen, back, brain, joints or spine that required at least an overnight stay in hospital.
  • It is chronic or ongoing (whether chronic or otherwise) and medically documented; under investigation; pending diagnosis; or pending test results.

*On a Single Trip policy, relevant time means the time of issue of the policy. On an Annual Multi-Trip policy, relevant time means the first time at which any part of the relevant trip is paid for or the time at which the policy is issued, whichever occurs last.

Does Over Fifty Travel Insurance cover existing medical conditions?

Yes, we can provide cover for many existing medical conditions to help keep you travelling.
If you have an existing medical condition (EMC) and, for example, take medication to keep that condition in check, it doesn’t mean you can’t purchase our travel insurance with medical conditions cover.
It does, however, mean you should tell us about all your EMCs, including anything for which medication is prescribed so we can complete an online health assessment. If your EMC is approved following the health assessment, we can offer you cover.

Which existing medical conditions does Over Fifty Travel Insurance automatically include?

We automatically include the existing medical conditions listed in the PDS provided that at the time you take out your policy:

  • all your existing medical conditions are on this list;
  • you have not been hospitalised or required treatment by a medical practitioner in the last 12 months for any of the listed conditions;
  • you are not under investigation for any of the listed conditions;
  • you are not awaiting investigation, surgery, treatment, or procedures for any of the listed conditions; and
  • your condition meets the criteria outlined in the PDS.

This means the conditions we automatically include (see PDS for list) only apply if you do not have other existing medical conditions beyond those on this list.
If your existing medical condition falls outside the criteria under the conditions we automatically cover in the PDS, we may still be able to cover you for an additional premium, subject to the outcome of a short medical assessment. You can get a quote online to complete the online medical assessment.

Which conditions cannot be covered by Over Fifty Travel Insurance?

Our plans do not provide policyholders with cover for claims which in any way relate to or are exacerbated by:

  • medical conditions that are undiagnosed or awaiting specialist opinion;
  • conditions involving drug or alcohol dependency;
  • travel booked or undertaken against the advice of any medical practitioner;
  • routine or cosmetic medical or dental treatment or surgery during the journey, even if your existing medical condition has been approved; and
  • conditions for which you are travelling to seek advice, treatment or review or to participate in a clinical trial.

Does Over Fifty Travel Insurance cover my trip if my relatives or family are sick?

Our OFI travel insurance plans includes some coverage related to the health of other people in your life who may impact your travel plans. We understand unfortunately things can happen that may mean you have to cancel your trip or return home early.
Our additional expenses benefit can provide some cover for claims for travel costs arising from the sudden disabling injury, sickness or disease or death of a relative or your business partner who is not travelling, so long as it meets the criteria outlined in our PDS.
Please note: “relative” means a person who is your spouse, de facto, parent, parent-in-law, stepparent, guardian, grandparent, child, foster child, grandchild, brother, brother-in-law, half-brother, stepbrother, sister, sister-in-law, half-sister, stepsister, daughter, daughter-in-law, stepdaughter, son, son-in-law, stepson, fiancé, fiancée, uncle, aunt, niece, or nephew.
Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply. Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details on what is and isn’t covered before deciding if our travel insurance is right for you.

What happens if I get sick on a cruise?

Domestic and international cruise ships do offer onboard medical assistance, but the medical staff are only there to stabilise your condition.
If you require urgent medical attention while on a cruise, you may need to be evacuated from your cruise and taken to hospital – which can be extremely costly depending on where you are in the world.
That’s where cruise travel insurance benefits can help when cruise cover is added to your International plan.
With our cruise insurance benefits included in your policy, we can not only assist with medical costs, but you’ll have our expert 24-hour Emergency Assistance team on hand to help if you are hospitalised.

Do Over Fifty Insurance Cruise Cover benefits cover emergency evacuations?

Our cruise insurance benefits help protect you in the event of an emergency evacuation from a cruise. Being transported to the nearest hospital via air or sea can be incredibly expensive, so adding cruise cover to your chosen international travel insurance plan may be something you wish to consider if you’re planning to go on a domestic or international cruise.

What is Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance?

An Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policy provides you with insurance for multiple trips taken during a 12-month period. It does not offer 12-months consecutive cover for 365 days of travel. If you are planning on taking multiple trips within a 12-month period, you may find an AMT plan to be an affordable policy option.

Does Over Fifty Comprehensive Travel Insurance include cancellation cover?

Our Travel Insurance plans don’t automatically include cover for amendment or cancellation costs.
Instead, we give our customers the freedom to add a level of cancellation cover during the quote process that best suits their travel plans.
Typically, people look to choose an amount that will cover all prepaid travel tickets, hotels, tours, or other travel-related expenses for all travellers on the policy. The level of cover you choose will be the total amount of cover available under the cancellation benefit on a per policy basis.
Please note: if you include cancellation cover in your policy, it will influence the premium you are charged.
